I seem to be photographing performance artists a lot, recently, so I thought I’d start a project where pictures were created in a collaboration with some of the performance artists I knew.
This is what I sent as an introduction to the project when requesting a collaboration:
Who: Performance artists who both create and perform.
What: A series of photos which reflect the style & subject matter of the artist, or an aspect of it.
Method: Starting with a conversation, the artist and photographer decide on the nature of the photographs, including venue, props and clothes. These can be scavenged. The shoot is expected to take an afternoon.
I’m not sure why this project popped into my head, or where it’s going. I like the methodology, as it reflects the way performance artists work. I’ll put the work in my blog, as well as giving the pictures to the artist. Maybe they’ll appear in a book, magazine or exhibition one day, but at the moment they are a work in progress.
If you’re a performance artist, and you know me, then you are probably on my list for future collaboration. I’m looking to do one a month, so it’s a long term project.
